Beyond Free: Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Pay to Learn Calligraphy
Welcome to my first Blog post. My name is Amanda, and I’m a modern calligraphy teacher. A little bit of a background. I started my calligraphy journey with a FREE online course. I found my teachers that way. It was a great way to get my feet wet and see if I wanted to pursue calligraphy. And boy, did I! But I also knew that if I wanted to get better I would need to sign up for a paid course. Here are reasons why I think it benefited me, and why I know it will benefit you, too!
Free is good, Paid is better. The free courses are short-lived, mostly lasting several days or so, and the teacher is wanting to get a feel for what to expect. I’ve done my own FREE classes, and I teach the very basics, BUT those are just the tip of the iceberg. After the week is done, you either find out that this is something you want to pursue yourself or not. In my Facebook page, Creative Handlettering for Stationery and Journals, I offer my member insight on the basic drills and strokes that one must get comfortable with in order to create letters in a 5-Day Drills challenge. This is a great introductory course but I don’t go into how to put these strokes together to create letter forms. That’s what the workshop is for.
FREE isn’t really free. You’re paying to find the right tools, right styles and right techniques with time and effort. You may spend hours looking online. I’ve spent several years learning the calligraphy and built my course in a way that makes sense, going over the workbook with my students to see what works and what doesn’t. I’ve curated a list of tools needed so you’re not browsing online stores or walking the aisles aimlessly, although there is no harm in that.
Joining a paid class allows you the opportunity to ask the questions that are unique to you. During the sessions I can help you troubleshoot any lingering questions in real time, and give you tricks that I’ve learned over the years. Free videos can’t give you that level of customer support.
Research reveals that engaging online classes can increase learner retention by more than 70%. One cannot rely 100% on free resources as the information may or may not be accurate, up-to-date or relevant to each and every student.
